Undergrounding of 132-150 kV grids
Plan for the undergrounding of the regional transmission grids

In March 2009, Energinet.dk collaborated with the regional transmission companies in preparing a cable action plan to be presented to the Danish Minister for Energy, Utilities and Climate.

The plan outlines the possibilities of going from an overhead line network to a completely underground 132-150 kV electricity transmission grid that has been prepared to handle the markedly increasing volumes of wind power-generated electricity in Denmark.

The plan describes the de-commissioning of the existing approx. 3,200 system km of 132-150 kV overhead lines and the undergrounding of around 2,900 km of new 132-150 kV cables.

The regional electricity transmission grid is owned by ten individual transmission companies and Energinet.dk. The decision to underground the regional grids will be made by the supervisory boards of the respective transmission companies.

On 4 November 2008, the political parties behind the energy agreement (from February 2008) entered into an agreement on the principles for the future expansion of the main electricity grid in Denmark, and the cable action plan is a result of this agreement.

The implementation of the plan is supported politically.
